Volt
Rotterdam, The Netherlands
Description
‘Volt’ is a corten steel (weathered steel) public light art sculpture by SellFable located in the North of Rotterdam. It is an ode to electricity and imagination, a portal to the parallel SellFable Machine Noir universe. The front side of the art installation features a drawing of an elegant electric fish and elements such as a voltmeter, which the observer can also interpret as a clock ticking away time. Stylistically, the artwork evokes elements of Art Nouveau and Gothic design. These image is cut out of the steel with a laser.
‘Volt’ lovingly wraps a protective layer around a TenneT TSO oil pressure unit. The weathering steel provides durable protection of the building inside. The warm colour of the rusted steel, the poetic appearance of the artwork and use of LED-light contribute to a feeling of safety and a positive vibe in this Rotterdam neighbourhood. The intricately drawn and lasercut facade measures approx. 4 x 6 meters and weighs close to 2,7 tonnes.
